We received this lovely letter and photograph in September 2006 from Kate S... who has given her permission to publish it, with minor omissions.
Several families from Rehoboth Baptist Church had the pleasure of visiting Nutley Windmill on August Bank Holiday Monday and making the acquaintance of some of your voluntary staff, in particular Vic Oliver and his family. We were moved by the level of dedication and commitment of these people to preserving our heritage and felt that we would like to do something to raise funds for and also awareness of the windmill. With this in mind, we are hoping to organise an evening event sometime in November of this year. We wondered if any of your team of volunteers would be willing to come and give a short introductory talk about the mill and related artefacts.
During our visit, it was mentioned that the next project , given adequate funds, would be the restoration of an old horse gin. Please find enclosed a cheque for £35.00 to commence a fund for this purpose. This money was raised by myself, my children and the children that I child mind by holding a Yard Sale over two consecutive days - see photo below. The children were very keen to help raise funds for the windmill as several had already visited the mill with their own parents. I was wondering, however, if it would be possible to bring them over to the mill on the Wednesday of the October Half-Term holiday to remind them of why they need to continue rallying support. If this would be at all possible, I would have several child minders and their charges who would be extremely interested.
